We are surrounded by images of War and Violence,
We present an image of Peace. Read More about Us!
Women in Black does not have officers, staff or an operations center. women in Black is not an organization, but a means of mobilization and a formula for action. Women in Black vigils started in Israel in 1988 by women opposed to Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. In the past decade WIB Italy has organized visits to Afghani women providing relief and compassion. WIB Belgrade and WIB Israel were nominated for the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. Also in 2001, WIB International received the Millennium Peace Prize for Women.
Who: Anyone who can maintain a posture of silence and non-violence
What: Silent vigil. Please wear black. Signs will be provided.
Why Wear Black?
Participants in vigils wear black as a sign of mourning for all that is lost through war and violence. Through this calm and dignified, but still visual and telling way of protesting, we hope to inspire pacifists in many countries.
What is the Purpose?
The group seeks to bring together people of all races, faiths, nationalities, and genders who support positions of nonviolence and who seek peace through mutual understanding and constructive dialogue. Women in Black all over the world organize non-violent actions making visible their resistance to war and militancy, and creating networks of solidarity and mutual support.
